The following are general guidelines and information for parents/players interested in GBYSL participation. We hope the explanation of the divisions, ages and play levels, is helpful for parents selecting the level of play that best suits their child’s abilities and, future growth expectations in the sport.
LEVELS OF PLAY:
GBYSL provides soccer playing opportunities for players of all skills and commitment levels. Our “Labeling” system of the different “Levels of Play” is as follows:
BRONZE – Beginner players and typically multi-sport players or players that only do soccer as a general activity. Typically practice once per week and have one game per week, though it can vary from coach to coach.
SILVER – Players that have played before, but that are a little more advanced in skills and/or more committed to soccer, while not making it a priority. Typically practice once, but sometimes twice per week and play games once per week as well. This level also suits players that although not fully committed to soccer, they have been together as a team for a while and are able to perform at a higher skill level than Bronze players. Silver level teams will sometimes play vs. recently promoted or formed Gold teams in an effort to provide opportunities for further development of players.
GOLD – It is considered the “Competitive” level and teams typically will play “local” games vs. teams from Carson, Truckee, Sparks, South Lake Tahoe & Gardnerville in addition to the local Reno teams. Games will sometimes be played twice per week and can be any day of the week, including Sundays. Teams at the gold level will begin at the U10 age year and practice two to three times per week and can sometimes have a paid coach or a volunteer coach that is more experienced.
Competitive teams are either formed within GBYSL or as part of one of the “local” northern Nevada clubs. Gold teams will typically travel for out of town tournaments during the season.
